The AFM of SA resolved to withdraw its Membership from TEASA

The CRL’s current approach is inconsistent with our beliefs. The AFM of SA remains committed to upholding our foundational values of integrity, relationships, accountability, and excellence.

The Apostolic Faith Mission of SA (The AFM of SA) noted the unsigned and undated statement from the Evangelical Alliance of South Africa (TEASA), supporting the call of the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious, and Linguistic Communities (CRL) to regulate the religious sector, specifically through the establishment of a Section 22 Committee. However, the AFM of SA, which is a member of TEASA, was not consulted prior to this statement being published and dissociate ourselves from it.

The AFM strongly condemns any form of exploitation, manipulation, or abuse within the religious sector. We believe that unethical behaviour should be dealt with swiftly and fairly. However, we strongly believe that:

  • Existing laws are sufficient. South Africa’s legal system already provides the means to deal with criminal and fraudulent activity.
  • Religious self-regulation works best. Churches with established constitutions, codes of conduct, and disciplinary processes have managed their affairs responsibly without State interference.
  • Freedom of religion must be protected. Allowing the government to define “legitimate” doctrine or leadership sets a dangerous precedent. History shows that when governments start to regulate faith, persecution often follows.
  • Transparency and inclusivity are essential. Any oversight structure that claims to serve the public good must be transparent, representative, and accountable.

The CRL’s current approach is inconsistent with our beliefs. The AFM of SA remains committed to upholding our foundational values of integrity, relationships, accountability, and excellence. Consequently, the AFM of SA resolved to withdraw its membership of TEASA.
