Past. Selby Khumalo
General Secretary
Selby was born on the 11th of April 1971 in Marrianhill, in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa. He is the third child of the late Mr Stanley Khumalo and Mrs Contance Khumalo. His siblings are two brothers, Maurice, who is late and Aubrey and three sisters, Maureen, who is late, Nonkululeko and Buhle, who is late. Selby is married to Pastor Elizabeth Khumalo (Ratau) on the 5th of April 1997, with three children: Njabulo, Thandeka and Lebogile.
Selby attended primary and high schools in Marrianhill, Dassenhoek and KwaNdengenzi near Pinetown in KwaZulu-Natal. He studied at the following Theological Colleges: Cape College of Theology, Central Bible College and Tshwane Theological Seminary. He obtained his 3-year Diploma in Theology in 1994 and his BA in Bible and Theology in 1995. In 2000, he enrolled for an MA-degree in Organisational Leadership through Cornerstone College (Cape Town) in partnership with Eastern University (USA); he completed two Module Courses, Research Methodology and Managing Cultural Diversity. He also completed his National Diploma in Public Administration (NQF 7) in 2014. He has been exposed to numerous short courses in developing his strategic leadership management skills and contributed presentations to various strategic platforms. He is currently studying towards his BTh Honours.
Selby was sworn in as a member of the National Assembly (Parliament) in 2004-2006 and was employed as Chief Director in the KZN Government in the Office of the Premier (2006-2021). As the head of the KZN Provincial Government Religious Affairs (2009 – 2010); he crafted the KZN Faith-Based Operations Strategy, organogram structure and job evaluation requirements.
He was ordained on the 13th of June 1999. He has pastored the following AFM Assemblies: AFM KwaMhlaga (1994-1996), AFM Madadeni (Junior Pastor; 1996-1998) and the AFM Lamontville Assembly (1998-2002). On the 4th of March 2002 he resigned his pastoral status with the AFM and was reinstated on the 15th of March 2015. He is currently the Presiding Pastor of AFM Charisma Outreach Centre in Durban since 2016. In 2001, he planted several branches that later became registered functional AFM Assemblies: Inner City, ILovu, and Yellowwood Park unfolded into Monclair. The Inner City Assembly later produced an additional three (3) branches that are now registered and functional AFM Assemblies.
Selby founded the following enterprises & initiatives: Charisma Centre Building Concept in Durban, Charisma Network Broadcasting Capacity (CNB TV), Charisma Outreach Foundation (NGO) & Charisma Academy NPC. He has also served in various leadership responsibilities. Selby was co-opted and appointed as the AFM Northern Natal Regional Secretary by the Regional Committee in 1997. He was the AFM Durban Central Youth Regional Chairperson (2001-2002) and the AFM eThekwini Unicity Network (Durban Central and Greater Durban Regions) Chairperson (2001-2002); driving the Joshua Generation Operation.
In October 2017 he was appointed by the National Office Bearers (NOB) as a member of The AFM of SA Presidential Advisory Committee on developing a Social Cohesion Framework. He was elected as General Secretary of the AFM of SA on 16 November 2021.
