In South Africa, we commemorate Women’s Month in August as a tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 to protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. Women’s month is also a celebration of the role that women play in our everyday life in the church and in society at large.
Women’s Month is a time to reflect on the contribution and courage of women over many generations and to celebrate how their efforts and bravery afforded the opportunities and freedoms we all enjoy today. The Bible relates the lives of several brave and wise women, who were used by God as influencers and leaders in their time.
We think of women like Queen Esther who showed great courage in telling the Persian king about a plot to assassinate him, and later, about a plan to have all the Jews in Persia killed. With the power of prayer and bravery, she saved her people.
We read about Deborah, one of the Judges of Israel who inspired the Israelites to a mighty victory over their Canaanite oppressors. She is known as the commander whose army of 10,000 Israelites rushed down from the hills, clashing with the Canaanite general Sisera who commanded nine hundred iron chariots and personally slayed him. Deborah was also a woman of discernment, great wisdom, and revelation: Judges 4:5 says that: “She held court under the Palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went up to her to have their disputes decided.”
Proverbs 31 speaks about a woman of noble character whose worth is far more than rubies. Verse 26-30 says: “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.’ – Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.”
As the AFM of SA, we honour and celebrate all the women in our lives: Our mothers, wives, daughters and all the pastors who are women and leaders in our church – not only during August month but always. We thank God for you and pray that He will guide you to fulfil His purpose for your life.
