Pastoral Letter: 4th Quarter 2025
December 5, 2025Condolences: Vanderbijlpark Tragedy
The Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa (AFM of SA), speaking as both parents and pastors, expresses deep sadness and heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their beloved children in the tragic accident in which twelve learners lost their lives on Monday, 19 January in Vanderbijlpark. We are profoundly grieved by the senseless loss of such young and promising lives, and we stand in solidarity with the families, schools, and communities affected during this painful time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn an unimaginable loss.
We are also deeply concerned by the continued loss of children in similar incidents. Reports suggesting reckless driving by the vehicle transporting the learners raise serious questions that cannot be ignored. The safety of our children must never be left to chance.
The AFM of SA strongly urges the Department of Education, school management, and parents to take shared responsibility for learner transport. There must be greater awareness, oversight, and active involvement in transport arrangements to ensure that vehicles are roadworthy, drivers are qualified and responsible, and safety standards are strictly followed.
Our children’s lives are precious. We call on all stakeholders to act with urgency and accountability so that preventable tragedies like this do not continue to claim innocent lives.
Dr Henri Weideman (President of the AFM of SA)
