 27 JULY ENG 2018

Dear Colleague,

The 2018 AFM General Business Meeting (GBM) is scheduled for 10-13 September 2018, at Woord-en-Lewe in Boksburg (Gauteng). The National Conference, however, will commence on Sunday evening, 9 September 2018 and conclude on Wednesday evening, 12 September 2018. All information needed to register can be found on the AFM website from the following link:

Also note that registrations can now be done online:

There are important constitutional amendments that will be discussed for adoption by the 2018 GBM. These amendments will have significant bearing on the election of Office Bearers in 2020. They deal with the experience required for those elected to lead the church at regional and national level, transitional mechanisms post elections, orientation of newly elected Office Bearers and their core responsibilities. Your attendance and participation would contribute to these discussions and decisions to be taken.

We will have a special service on Sunday evening (9.09.2018) to celebrate the 110th Anniversary of the AFM of SA. Special Guests from other church organisations have been invited to attend this specific service. You cannot afford to miss it! Further we have PCD sessions which will be beneficial to both pastors and members of the church.

I am urging all pastors, assembly leaders and members of the church to attend this important event. I am looking forward to meeting you at the 2018 GBM in Boksburg!

The church is involved with the challenges of the local community

In our celebrations of the AFM’s 110th year we are constantly reminded that we as a church and individuals are “sent” – sent to continue the mission of our Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:16-20). Community Involvement is one of the AFM’s strategic drivers. It is about addressing the real needs in our communities, to be socio-economically and Spiritually relevant. Below is a short article on how the AFM practically defined Community Involvement.

I would like to encourage you to:

(1) Visit our One AFM Game Plan page on our website. Here you can view and download all the AFM’s strategic drivers in 4 different languages: Afrikaans, English, isiZulu and Sesotho:

(2) Send us your story of Community Involvement. We would love to learn more and see how and where our AFM assemblies and members are involved. You can send an e-mail to:
[email protected]

MG Mahlobo

As a church we promote the cause of truth and justice in society and be actively involved in the healing and restoration of our communities.

“Ethical” for us, means to do what is right according to the principles of the Bible.

“Socio-Economic relevance” refers to our Christlike involvement in the physical, economic and relational circumstances that people and communities find themselves in.

Equivalent terms:

  • Help others meet their needs
  • Reaching out to people in need
  • Doing good to others
  • Upliftment
  • Making a difference in people’s every day life
  • Serving the total person
Key Scriptures:
  • Isaiah 58:6-8
  • Math. 10:8
  • Math. 25:35
  • Luke 4:18
  • Luke 14:13+14
  • James 1:27
Our involvement in our communities is of great importance. It flows from our vision-statement: “We see a church accessible to all people, celebrating our unity and God given diversity, empowering our members for caring and transforming our communities to the glory of God.

Our greatest motivation to be a blessing to our communities is not humanistic or philanthropic, but the love of God. Remember that God sent His Son – not for the church as such, but for the world. He uses His church to be His instrument to touch the world, our communities.

While our missional calling is the foundation of “The One AFM Game Plan”, our community involvement is key to the fulfilment of our missional calling. The extent to which we impact our communities will determine our missional success. Our impact on our communities can me measured by the well-known saying: “Will your community miss you if your church closes down?

We live and minister in communities that are adversely affected by the Evil One. A large part of the South African society suffers because of our dire socio-economic circumstances. Whatever the historical or present reasons for this situation, the church can not stand aloof and merely hold government or humanitarian organizations responsible. If we can help and facilitate people to help themselves, we have achieved something remarkable. The church must come to the aid of such people through caring, empowering and sharing.

In our involvement in socio-economic matters we must however guard against keeping people dependent. This easily develops into a mentality of entitlement – an attitude that is already abundantly obvious in SA. We need to empower people to take responsibility for their own lives and future -in other words, help others meet their needs. If we can assist people in meaningful training and job-creation, we do well.

There are indeed a number of our local churches who in this regard have remarkable success-stories to tell.

Answer these three questions to determine to what extent COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT is applied in your assembly:

  1. Are you aware of the specific needs in your local community? [List and describe them.]
  2. For every need, are you able to identify the appropriate strategy: (1) mobilising members to get involved, (2) partnering with existing community projects/activities or (3) establish/create a new community project from scratch.
  3. What impact is this project making in your community? [Describe how your community changed as a result of this project.]

Gelyke beskrywing:

  • Help ander met hulle behoeftes
  • Steek ʼn hand uit na behoeftige mense
  • Doen goeie dinge teenoor ander
  • Opheffing
  • Maak ʼn verskil in mense se daaglikse lewens.
  • Dien die algehele persoon

  • Jesaja 58:6-8
  • Matt. 10:8
  • Matt. 25:35
  • Lukas 4:18
  • Lukas 14:13+14
  • Jakobus 1:27

  1. Watter impak maak hierdie projek op jou gemeenskap? [Beskryf hoe jou gemeenskap as gevolg van hierdie projek verander het.]

 1 JUNE ENG 2018

On Friday the 25th of May the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa celebrated its 110th birthday! This historic milestone was celebrated with a special event that was held at the AGS Centurion Assembly in Pretoria, with Pastor Rudi Briel and Mariesa Briel as hosts. The theme for the service was “The Going Gospel – Moving Forward” and demonstrated by means of a 110 Year emblem that was specifically designed for the occasion. The main feature of the emblem is the arrow that symbolises the AFM’s apostolic DNA of breaking new ground and moving forward with the mission.

Guests included the National Office Bearers, Regional Office Bearers in and around the Gauteng area (representing regions, networks and national departments), the AFM national office staff, leadership from the AGS Centurion Assembly as well as special guests from the Pentecostal/Charismatic Christian community. The programme was divided into three main sections.

The first section was titled “Rewind – to move forward we need to understand where we come from”. The guests were pleasantly surprised when they heard the programme director, Past. Rudi Coertzen (Regional Leader of the East Rand Region) call Past. Dudley Goodenough, the great grandson of Mrs. C.L. Goodenough to the stage. It is well known in the AFM’s history that Mrs. Goodenough was the sent one to receive two American missionaries (Jong G. Lake and Thomas Hezmalhalch) at the Johannesburg Park train station in May in 1908. He delivered a beautiful rendition of her life. Connecting further with our roots and history, Dr. I.S. Burger (Former President of the AFM of SA) talked about missionality and how the early church was spontaneously and practically a missional church. He reminded us that the church is in the business of “sending” – in the business of MISSION (John 3:16). Every AFM member is sent to “go and be church”, a representative of Christ in the world.
The second section reflected on the current impact and growth of the AFM and was titled: “Pause – the current footprint of the AFM in South Africa and globally.” Dr. H.J. Weideman (General Secretary) did a presentation on the growth that the AFM experienced from 1911 to 2018 as illustrated in the figure below:
Dr. H.J. Weideman also explained that the AFM is in the process of becoming a modern day missional movement and made reference to the One AFM Game Plan – the AFM’s Missional Strategy that was launched in 2013. To give perspective on the AFM’s footprint globally, Rev. F.C. Chikane (President of AFM International) reported on the AFM presence in approximately 35 countries on 6 continents of the world. The unity that was achieved in 1996 resulted in many new international opportunities for the church.Past. M.G. Mahlobo (President of the AFM) concluded with the last section titled: “Play – where is the AFM heading in the future?”. The President provided the modern-day context in which followers of Jesus find themselves in today. The vision of the AFM was reinforced: “We see a church (AFM) that is accessible to all people, celebrating its unity and God-given diversity, empowering its members for caring and transforming communities to the glory of God”.

He also casted clear vision on the two major shifts for the AFM as the church is heading into the future:

  • Moving from a passive member to an active modern-day missionary. May every AFM member understand what it means to be “sent” by God impacting the lives of others with the love, character and message of Jesus.
  • Moving from Pastor/Shepherd to Coach. May every AFM Pastor understand what it means to be a missional coach by empowering members to become modern-day missionaries in their communities. May AFM assemblies be breeding grounds for these apostolic modern-day agents.
The event was concluded with a powerful poem by Past. PN Kekana titled “The AFM on the move!”. This poem was especially written for the 110th birthday celebration and was the perfect ending to a blessed celebration service!

Various regional structures and assemblies hosted their own 110th birthday celebration services – it was wonderful to attend some of these events and also see video clips posted by AFM assemblies on social media. (Please do remember to tag “@The Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa” so that we can see the celebrations from a national level.) For those that still want to host their own celebrations, we would like to make the resources available. All available resources can be downloaded from the AFM website link below:

BOKSBURG ON 16-19 MAY 2018

The theme of the Congress was “Living to impact generations through the Holy Spirit.” – and part of the overall vision of Empowered21 which is:
That every person living on earth would have an authentic encounter with Jesus Christ through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit by Pentecost 2033.”
Both the theme of the Congress and the vision of Empowered21 are in tune with the AFM’s strategy to become a missional church. My appeal is that we should find ways in which we can embrace the theme and make it our motto. The Congress was attended by approximately 2,000 delegates from 50 countries. Some of the highlights of the Congress included:

A 2,400-voice children’s choir filling the stage, all dressed in white shirts, captivating the delegates with animated praise and worship songs. Apostle, Dr Opoku Onyinah, one of the co-chairs for this Congress had this to say about the children’s choir: “It moved me to the core of my being and brought tears to hear these children commit their love to Christ in song and spoken word to the 2033 challenge of Empowered21—to see every person on earth have an authentic encounter with the Holy Spirit by 2033.”

The Empowered21 Africa Congress ended on Saturday, May 19 as more than 1,100 young people came forth to be anointed for ministry. Dr. Billy Wilson, president of Oral Roberts University and global co-chair of Empowered21, remarked: “To see the altar filled with young leaders under the age of 35 ready to accept their destiny to make a spiritual impact as Spirit-empowered leaders was amazing. It was an honor to pray over them as the future doctors, lawyers, presidents, evangelists, pastors, bishops, government officials and professors…the next generation of leaders for the nations of Africa.”

Empowered21 is a useful platform for Spirit-empowered churches and ministries to reflect on the ministry of the church and to share ministry resources. Some of these resources are available on its webpage: I would like to take this opportunity to thank all AFM pastors and members who prayed for the success of this event and those who attended.

 1 JUNE AFR 2018

Die eerste afdeling was getiteld: “Rewind – to move forward we need to understand where we come from”. Dr. I.S.

Dr. H.J.

Dr. H.J.

Past. M.G. Die visie van die AGS is herbeklemtoon:  “We see a church (AFM) that is accessible to all people, celebrating its unity and God-given diversity, empowering its members for caring and transforming communities to the glory of God”.

P.N. Kekane getiteld:  “The AFM on the move!”

BOKSBURG OP 16-19 MAY 2018

Die tema van die kongres was “Living to impact generations through the Holy Spirit.”

That every person living on earth would have an authentic encounter with Jesus Christ through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit by Pentecost 2033.”

It moved me to the core of my being and brought tears to hear these children commit their love to Christ in song and spoken word to the 2033 challenge of Empowered21— to see every person on earth have an authentic encounter with the Holy Spirit by 2033.”

Dr. Billy Wilson, president van die Oral Roberts Universiteit en globale mede-voorsitter van Empowered21, het gesê: “To see the altar filled with young leaders under the age of 35 ready to accept their destiny to make a spiritual impact as Spirit-empowered leaders was amazing. It was an honor to pray over them as the future doctors, lawyers, presidents, evangelists, pastors, bishops, government officials and professors…the next generation of leaders for the nations of Africa.

Liewe Kollegas,

Dit was vir my ‘n groot voorreg om die derde “Global Christian Forum” (GCF) in Bogota (Columbia) gedurende 23-27 April 2018, by te woon.  “Together Christians are called to take up the challenges of peace, unity and costly discipleship”, het die “Global Christian Forum” op 27 April gesê in ‘n boodskap aan kerke wêreldwyd.

Daar was 251 deelnemers in totaal. Die tema was “Let mutual love continue” (Heb 13:1).

Dear Colleagues,

It was a great privilege for me to attend the third Global Christian Forum (GCF) in Bogota (Columbia) on 23-27 April 2018. “Together Christians are called to take up the challenges of peace, unity and costly discipleship”, the Global Christian Forum said on 27 April in a closing message to churches world wide.

Participants brought together the widest variety of Christian traditions. They came from the Catholic Church (Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity), the Pentecostal World Fellowship, the World Council of Churches, and the World Evangelical Alliance together with those of many other Christian World Communions and international Christian organisations. We were 251 in total. The theme was ‘Let mutual love continue’ (Heb 13:1).

The meeting created a useful platform of sharing stories and faith experiences. It was for me surprising to hear stories and experiences, like that of ours, from the participants’ encounter with Lord Jesus. Three factors that emerged were (i) Africa’s new place in global Christianity as of 2018, (ii) the rise of Independent Christianity and (iii) Christians who identify themselves separately from Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants.

These factors are currently researched by the Center for the Study of Global Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts, in the United States of America. Over the last 100-year period, Christian affiliation has decreased slightly in the northern hemisphere and increased substantially in the southern hemisphere.

One aspect that was fascinating with the statistics was that, for the first time, Africa has more Christians in comparison with other continents. Africa has 631 million Christians. This translates to 45% Christians in Africa. The global picture, however is not good at all. Christians are 2.5 Billion which is equivalent to 33% of the current world’s population.

The number of Pentecostal/Charismatic Christians has shown exponential growth and is second to that of the Catholics. While the numbers make one feel good the question that remains is: What is the impact of these numbers in the world? If one looks at South Africa with its over 83% Christians one would have expected a prosperous and peaceful country, but we know that it is not the case. We, as South-Africans, need to do more soul searching with a view to making our confession of faith compatible to our lifestyle.

A true AFM member must be a follower of Jesus in word and in deeds.

 Newsflash, Friday 4 May 2018

Dear Colleagues,

I trust you are well! I want to remind all that Ascension Day is next Thursday on the 10th of May 2018. The Pentecostal Week starts on 11 May 2018 and conclude on the Pentecostal Sunday which will be on the 20th of May 2018. My appeal is that Baptism in the Holy Spirit, the Gifts of the Spirit and the Fruit of the Spirit should be given priority both during the Pentecostal Week and the Pentecostal Sunday. Let’s believe God for a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit!

I have asked Past. Robbie Black to give us feedback on the Up4SA united prayer initiative that took place during the month of February this year. This is a growing prayer movement with more and more communities getting involved:

Up4SA is all about standing ‘Up’ to the call for PRAYER and UNITY in South Africa on grassroots level.  There is no better time for ordinary believers (across denomination and race) to grab the opportUNITY to be ambassadors of Unity through Prayer all across South Africa! The body of Christ needs to take the lead in this regard! I’m whole heartily convinced that healing in our Nation will come from grassroots level, it’s time for the Christian community to ACTIVELY PURSUE UNITY!
We honour the Lord for more than 250 towns that joined in united prayer this year. There are so many testimonies of towns where relationships are being restored in communities and between local churches and pastors since the start of Up4SA in 2016. The gates of hell are shaken when believers across race and denominations take hands in United Prayer. Strongholds of hate, anger, racism, self-righteousness etc. are broken when we unite in prayer. We have a responsibility as Christians to reach out to each other, we need to build relationships so that we can be united to take a stand for what is right and pure in our Communities and Country!  We can start by praying together in unity! Let’s not wait for next year’s nationwide Up4SA prayer weekend, start now!
There are some very important aspects on prayer that we need to emphasize! Remember that prayer is about relationship, whether we want to know it or not, our prayer life reflects our relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit!  Secondly we know that prayer is a discipline. We need to discipline ourselves to pray, it doesn’t just happen or comes easily. Thirdly, prayer is also about responsibility. So many times we say that we pray for issues of concern and for each other, but do we really pray?
Lastly, we do realize that prayer is continual, Acts 12:5   (KJV) “Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.”  The Bible also teaches us that the Holy Spirit are constantly interceding for us. Praise the Lord! If we say that we are truly filled with the Holy Spirit and that we are Pentecostal, we should have the nature and fullness of the Holy Spirit in us. This means that we will have a supernatural unction / desire / yearning to be a praying Body!
What a blessing it is to be a Pentecostal Church, the blessing of praying in the Holy Spirit!  When we don’t know what to pray, the Holy Spirit guides us. The wonder of receiving the revelation of the mysteries of God, to experience the heart of God in prayer, to get in sync with God as we pray in tongues.
Let us keep four things in mind: God hears prayer, God heeds prayer, God answers prayer, God delivers by prayer.” EM Bounds
Love and blessings!
Robbie Black

Today I am sharing an extremely important and strategic event with you – and especially with our AFM Pastors, Governing Body Members, Leaders and Members in and around the Gauteng Province.

Empowered21 is an organization that is helping to shape the future of the Spirit-empowered movement throughout the world. It is open to all Spirit-empowered churches, ministries, organisations, networks and fellowships. The Empowered21 African Congress is a strategic empowerment opportunity that speaks directly into the heart of missionality and the AFM’s “One AFM Game Plan”. The vision of EMPOWERED21 is:

“That every person on earth would have an authentic encounter with Jesus Christ through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit…by Pentecost 2033.”

This vision mirrors the Great Commission and connects to the basic vision of every Christian church – and especially every AFM assembly. In attendance will be a wide array of ministry leaders from around the world, including William Wilson (President, Oral Roberts University), George Wood (Chairman, World Assemblies of God Fellowship); Opoku Onyinah (President, Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council), Frank Chikane (President, The Apostolic Faith Mission International); Daniel Kolenda (President, Christ for All Nations); Ron Luce (Global Youth Strategist, Generation Next) and many others.

Ten focus areas have been identified for both the main and individual track sessions (that are aligned with the AFM’s missional church strategy):

Prayer networks

Women’s ministry

Children’s ministry

Next Generation Youth Network (NGN)

Theological scholars

Advocacy & prophetic leadership

Humanitarian aid & disaster relief

Christian Business Network

Through registering for this congress you get the opportunity to be part of network structures (from contintental to national levels) that serve and network with African leaders on each of the focus areas. The idea is to create new connections that will empower the Spirit-filled movement to fulfil the Great Commission.

On Saturday 19 May 2018 the program will focus on inter-generational impartation. All young people, Youth Pastors & Leaders are invited to participate in the sessions hosted by the Next Generation Network (NGN). Local youth that can’t afford to come to the whole Congress are encouraged to buy tickets for the Saturday only at a special youth discounted price of R150. Youth tickets for the Saturday will be available soon.

I want to encourage you to attend this Congress as it will strengthen the overall leadership in your assembly, region, network or department. The registration fee has been lowered to R600. Online registration can be done through i-tickets at The link is also on the Empowered21 official website:

 Nuusflits, Vrydag 4 Mei 2018

Liewe Kollegas,

“Let us keep four things in mind: God hears prayer, God heeds prayer, God answers prayer, God delivers by prayer.” EM Bounds
Liefde en Seën!
Robbie Black
