Morals hit for six by new Act

Morals hit for six by new Act

The challenge to build the moral fibre of our nation has been dealt another low blow by an aspect of the new Children’s Act that no one may refuse to sell or distribute free condoms to a child who is over the age of 12 years, said Dr Isak Burger, president of the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM)

In a statement Dr Burger, on behalf of the church’s national office bearers, said that the new Children’s Act undermined the basic parental rights by making provision for a child over 12 to request contraception without parental consent.

“These sections of the Act are totally unacceptable and undermine everything that church, religious institutions and others are trying to do to lift the morality of the nation.

“These aspects of the Act actually encourage promiscuity and the subsequent risk of contracting HIV and AIDS. It also threatens parental rights and encourages a child to go behind their parents back to get contraceptive aids. It breaths contempt for authority in the home as well as transparent relationships between parents and children.

“While welcoming the broad intend of the Children’s Act it is extremely disappointing that our legislators paid little regard to the crucial value of sexual morality.

“It’s a proven fact that abstinence is the only sure way of preventing HIV and AIDS and now we have a piece of legislation that says by implication that it’s all right for children as young as 12 to engage in sex.

“We will be joining with other organisations requesting an urgent amendment to the Act that brings it in line with acceptable family values and protects young children from entering into a promiscuous lifestyle,” said Dr Burger.
